The New Munsell Student Color Set (2nd Edition)
Albert Munsell s system of color notation has been taught for nearly a century, but
the applications and uses of the system are constantly changing. Long and Luke s text
teaches the importance of a standardized language to communicate color and the
factors affecting how we perceive it. The three dimensions of color hue, value, and
chroma are also described. There is a brief contextual description of other color systems.
This text bridges the gap between the theory and appreciation of color. MunsellA?A?A‚A‚A?A‚A‚A®
color charts, to be assembled with new, enlarged chips, are the basis for additional
projects and exercises. This set is ideal for students of design, art, fashion, architecture,
interior design, manufacturing, color science, and anyone else who works with or is
interested in color.
Currency - Revised
Assignment 1: Currency
My fictional universal currency has an overall theme of world exploration. To tie directly in with this theme, I will title the currenct "patria." Translated from Latin, "patria" means homeland, which reinforces the concept of a global community, illustrated by images of the original explorers and explorational tools used when the planet was not entirely/properly documented. Some of the symbols I am using that help portray the idea of concept of world exploration and navigation are mostly tools, such as: compasses (both types), helm wheels, ships, maps, sextants, star charts, etc. I will also attempt to incorporate some counterfeit-protection related aspects that exist on most true currencies, such as a holographic strip, fine-line illustrations, as well as faint color variations. I decided to place the more informational materials (world bank, signature, serial, etc) along the bottom, out of the way and to help establish a balance in weight, heaviest at the bottom, also keeping the least interesting aesthetics away from the main subject. While this is aimed to be a global currency, each general region will have their own set of likenesses and important illustrations. This pair of denominations are for southern Europe.
"The very cool Barbara Hodgson [gave] a talk Thursday 12 July at Emily Carr as part of the summer book arts program. She [spoke] about her upcoming limited edition book, The Temperamental Rose. This is a book about color wheels. With her collaborator, the binder Claudia Cohen, the book reproduces versions of color studies from the past five centuries, and offers new and fanciful ways of seeing color. An introductory essay briefly explains the history of color, and each of the color charts is accompanied by explanatory text.
The text and color wheel outlines were printed letterpress from polymer plates by David Clifford. He completed work at the end of June, and Barbara is now immersed in all the hand coloring, embroidering and pop-up construction for the wheels. The edition of 30 copies will be uniformly bound in a profusion of color and issued in a matching box, created by Claudia for this project, along with a set of six dry artists' pigments in small glass vials. It will be published this fall by Heavenly Monkey Editions, and has been fully subscribed for some time already...." text by Heavenly Monkey's Rollin Milroy
